Usnea sp. lichen

Site-specific, living installation on the grounds of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program.

Created from long strands of fallen Usnea sp. lichen, these ropes were sited in carefully selected old oaks. The two lichen ropes were intended to be living artworks, made of material gathered from site, transformed, and returned to site. As the California weather shifts from winter rains to fog to summer drought, the ropes come alive or go into dormancy just as the lichen do.
